The farm enjoys a wide range of soil types. A comprehensive soil survey was conducted by the viticultural experts Dawid Saayman, Eben Archer and Andrew Teubes. Andrew Teubes has since remained with the farm as viticultural consultant. Although there are sections of the farm that offer high potential soils, the larger proportion present medium potential. This, coupled with the relatively high clay content of the subsoil, creates an almost perfect environment for the cultivation of high quality dry-land vineyards.

The clay-rich subsoil allows for good water holding capacity. Most of the vineyard blocks are planted on sites characterised by decomposed granite subsoils. A feature of these mica-rich soils is their ability to impart a wonderful minerality to the wine. The climate, altitude and aspects of Glen Alpine are our main assets - and these, coupled with our complex soil patterns, results in the creation fine and distinctive wines.
